Liverpool 2-0 Southampton Player Ratings – Mane Makes The Difference As Klopp’s Side Chase Down Top Four Place

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side got back to winning ways in the Premier League with a hardfought 2-0 victory over Southampton that puts them to within six points of fourth place.

With just one goal in his last seven games for Liverpool prior to Saturday’s clash with Southampton, Sadio Mane knew he needed to get back to scoring ways. And, fortunately for Liverpool, that’s exactly what he did.

Looking dangerous in attack from the very start of the game, Sane struck after just 31 minutes when a wonderful lofted cross from Mohamed Salah allowed the striker to power home an important goal from the header inside the left post.

While the result may suggest Liverpool picked up a standard win over Southampton, the manner in which the game played out couldn’t have been further from that suggestion.

Liverpool certainly had their chances, but so too did Southampton and if not for the heroics of Alisson in goal it may have been a completely different outcome for Klopp’s side.

Whether it was getting a glove to Nathan Tella’s header in the first half or the powerful block he made to Ibrahima Diallo’s shot late in the second half, Alisson looked back to his very best for Liverpool and helped ensure all three points.

Although Salah never got his name on the scoresheet, the Egypt international was at the heart of everything Liverpool did in attack on Saturday evening.

Undoubtedly, the senior forward’s most important contribution came just after the half hour mark when he set up Mane for Liverpool’s first half goal but Salah was constantly on the lookout for a goal of his own throughout the match and looked back to his very best.
